Dimension 5

"Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going."

Jim Rohn

The habits of mind, developed by Art Costa, are 16 social intelligences that are integral to the successful learning of any student. Through Art Costa's research he identified 16 habits of mind that students must possess in order to think intelligently in different situations. He also discovered that these habits of mind were not just things ingrained in good students but like most things, these habits or social intelligences can be taught.
The habits of mind reflect what intelligent people tend to do when confronted with a problem or decision where there may not be a clear answer or resolution. The critical attributes of lifelong learners is not just their ability to gain important information but also knowing how they should act on that knowledge. The habits of mind provide students with rational and organised thinking processes that help them to act intelligently in situations that might be highly stressful or where they are not sure of the answer.

By explicitly teaching students the 16 habits of mind we are providing students with the tools to act intelligently in situations where stress or a complex solution may exist. By imbedding the habits of mind into the curriculum we are gearing our students to higher order thinking processes and establishing them as lifelong learners.
